Raising Awareness

Students at The Center work together to raise community awareness on a variety of issues.

Most recently CSJ commemorated International Peace Day. The students contacted and brought in a speaker, Madelyn Hoffman, from NJ Peace Action to highlight her own experiences working in Montclair and the surrounding community as a peace activist for over 20 years. Having recently traveled to Afghanistan, she was able to show the students slides of her organization helping young Afghan women struggling during the occupation. As part of International Peace Day, CSJ students proactively acquired over 500 student signatures on peace pledges and showed their support by wearing blue ribbons throughout the day. The pledges were sent to the state capital requesting the state join the many nations and states around the world that commemorate International Peace Day. That same day two CSJ students went to the state capital to speak to legislators about changing a provision that allows the military access to NJ children’s private information. CSJ offers interested students many levels of participation. Students have traveled to peace protests, created award-winning films on the injustices of race and class, and participated in fighting for affordable housing within their community. Students even inspired teachers to order sweatshop free CSJ logo shirts for participants in the Center.

Youth in the town of Montclair have the capabilities, resources, and ambition to pursue any and all goals.
